VIDEO STATEMENT OF FREDERICK CALLAHAN

Q: This is your research mentor we are talking about. You’re the only person that might be able to get him out of this. F.D., you need to be his voice. So. Were you at the party?
A: (Nods “yes”)
Q: Did you know why they were throwing the party?
A: They were celebrating. An achievement. The Doctor has been working on it since early November and it’s completed.
Q: How long before the party was this, F.D.? How many days before the 25th? The Doctor is your research mentor, was any of your work associated with this celebration?
A: Twenty days.
Q: What happened at the party? Who was there? Did the doctor come in with Dae? The Doctor said you were talking. Were you drinking? Having food?
A: Six. (inaudible) I was talking to some of my friends.
Q: Who were these friends? And then what happened?
A: Research partners. And then I…  walked into the other room.
Q: You went into the kitchen? What did you see in there? Did anything stand out to you? Appliances, electronics, anything?
A: It was just the kitchen.
Q: Yes, I think I’m well aware of that. Someone else was in there, right? What was in there? Did someone open the window?
A: (inaudible)… computer.
Q: Why was there a computer in the kitchen? Was it your own computer? Did you bring it in there?
A: Oh, uh, no sorry. There wasn’t a computer. I spaced out.
Q: And then it went dark, is that true? Did you hear anything?
A: Something might have fallen over, some people were screaming. There was a lot of talking, squawking. I couldn’t really make out what was happening.
Q: Screaming? Was it like someone was excited, like a party with drunk people? Or was it more like someone was being attacked, like a murder?
A: I don’t know.
Q: And squawking you said? Like birds?
A: There were leaves.
Q: Leaves? What were the leaves like? Where was the tree?
A: In the corner.
Q: A full grown tree in the room, really?
A: The Doctor is an expert in pigeon training. He thinks that the birds need a good resting place.
Q: Okay, right! What are the pigeons like?
A: (no audible response)
Q: You and The Doctor trained pigeons together. That’s your research, right? What is training pigeons like?
A: What? … (inaudible) Yes. This is my… (inaudible) Hey, what are you?
Q: Excuse me?
A: (Shakes head “no”) Can you…  

(SIGNAL LOST. RECORDING LOST FOR 00:02:49.)

Q: … ops, it seems like this just stopped working. That’s weird. Ah… That’s so strange. These settings are suddenly all off. Just gimme a sec while I call in the tech, okay?

Q: Yes, it just stopped working. I’m not sure why. No, he didn’t touch anything… (inaudible) Well, this is hardly my fault, is it? You’re always trying to…  (inaudible) Sorry about that, F.D. How many years have you been working for The Doctor again?
A: … uh, I… it’s… it’s my fifth year working for him.
Q: The feathers we found were black. Pigeons are not black, no?
A: I…
Q: No. Then how did the birds come in? F.D.?
A: I… I don’t know.
Q: So birds flew in the room and that was why it got dark?
A: (Inaudible) … (No?)
Q: Then what happened, F.D.?
A: I wasn’t looking… was at the… (inaudible)
Q: Speak up just a little, alright? Do you remember a computer?
A: I remembered I had something I had due… and all that.
Q: What do you mean ‘and all that’?
A: Submitting… my thesis draft.
Q: And that was to The Doctor?
A: Yes.
Q: And yet everyone was currently being attacked by birds. Was submitting your draft really the most important thing on your mind right then?
A: (No audible response)
Q: Where was the computer?
A: In the bedroom.
Q: In the bedroom? When did you go to the bedroom?
A: I don’t remember.
Q: We found one of the birds. It’s not a real bird. F.D., did you know that? It’s mechanical.
A: I… don’t know.
Q: You’ve worked with these models before? They’re to learn about real birds and simulate their behavior.
A: (No?)
Q: F.D.
A: I don’t know. I don’t remember anything.
Q: F.D. Look at me. You already told me you’ve been working for The Doctor for five years. These birds’ flight paths are controlled and activated by a computer program. One that is on The Doctor’s laptop only.
A: I’m… I didn’t do anything!
Q: You know what, F.D., I brought you here because I know you didn’t do it. Frederick, look at the man in the photo right here. (Paper rustling) You know him. You know his eccentricness and how easily he is swayed to do just that little more. The bastard doesn’t care about anything but his results. I know you’re not like that. You just happen to be working for him. So, when did you…  bedroom? When did you get to the computer in the bedroom?
A: I’m not lying. Please. I really don't know. I was in the kitchen. There were so many people. I don’t remember. I don’t know. Please. Let me go.
Q: I believe you, but you have to tell me everything that happened so that we have the evidence, alright? I’m going to give you a little break. Sergeant Ainsworth and I are going to step out for a little bit. The bathroom’s to the back, you can clean up a little bit. And then we’ll be back in a few minutes.
A: (Yes).
